The Port of Los Angeles is to retrofit its Pasha marine terminal to function entirely off-grid, powered by a rooftop solar and battery energy storage-based microgrid. The $27 million Green Omni Terminal Demonstration Project is already underway, with engineering design firm Burns & McDonnell announcing this week that it has been selected to provide design-build-engineering and project management services. The project aims to bring the terminal to zero-emissions status, featuring electric vehicles, a 1 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) array, a 2.6 MWh battery storage system and an integrated energy management system.
Engineering is set to begin this month, with construction planned to start in October and finish in 2017. [dec]
